Splendid Kwélé mask. Kwélé are people of the northwest of Congo-Brazzaville and from the east of Gabon.
Kwele settled in this region of the humid forest a little before the arrival of the Europeans (at the end of the XIXth century) and play a forested agriculture of subsistence with a little of hunt, picking and peach. Come from the west, they were pushed by Fang, which, equipped with guns, have undertaken a slow migration for XVIIIth century southward. Their way of life changed with the evolution of the society and the working of the forest which opened their region to the rest of the country.
Kwele produce polychrome masks where the white colour predominates, splendidly made proportional, without mouth, but endowed with big orbits taking all breadth of the face with cracked eyes. They are used in rituals linked to political direction in villages.
Superb mask to be put on a piece of furniture or to be hung on the wall! Dimensions : 40x35cm - Weight : +/- 600g.
